- The CCL Modem Tool is a Connection Tool for Communications Toolbox.
- It lets you establish a connection with a remote computer through

-
- C'mon, Paul. Jeff only mentioned Stuffit 1.5 because (1) Alysis mentioned
- beta software problems and (2) AOL still distributes 1.5 to new members.
- Jeff's point was that the problem is not just with beta software. It is
- with pretty standard pre-existing well-established software, too. Jeff
- was being rather gentle with Alysis. An all-out "Jane, you stupid slut"

- Subject: Aladdin & Alysis: miscommunication (A)
-
- In 10-146, Paul Baim takes me to task for the comments I made about the
- conflict between StuffIt and MDS. He says my comments are "unsubstantiated
- fluff," "irresponsible," asks why Alysis "gets the blame" for conflicts
- with other programs and wonders whether I have some hidden agenda.
-
- The curious should go back to 10-145 and reread what I wrote. I said quite
- clearly that I did not think Alysis was lying. I did not "blame" Alysis for
- the problems; I just spread the word that the conflict was widespread and
- affected versions of StuffIt that many Mac owners have. Since AOL
- distributes 1.5.1 to all of its subscribers (even today), I thought it was
- important to point out the conflict with that version.
-
- Paul asks if the problem affects version 1.6 of StuffIt. I don't know,
- Paul, but I'll bet you five bucks it does. Aladdin's letter didn't indicate
- the existence of any version of StuffIt without the conflict. I don't own
- or use MDS; I don't own or use version 1.6 of StuffIt. I can't check. I
- thought it a safe assumption that if the older versions of StuffIt don't
- work with MDS and the latest beta version of StuffIt still doesn't, that
- all inbetween versions didn't work as well. The assumption is hardly
- far-fetched. Did the inner workings of StuffIt for constructing archives
- change so dramatically between 1.5.1 and 1.6? Is it likely that 1.5.1
- creates corrupt archives with MDS files, the latest beta version creates
- corrupt archives, but 1.6 does not? And how is it irresponsible to make
- such an assumption in a note? I clearly stated it was an assumption; I did
- not state the conclusion as a fact.
-
- So let's just change the sentence. Rather than saying I was making "a safe
- assumption" let's instead say "to be safe, assume..." There. Much better.
- Since this conflict causes data loss, better safe than sorry.
-
- Paul wonders about my agenda. I got involved in this very simply. I was
- browsing through the MacSeven section of CompuServe and found buried in the
- posted messages a note from Aladdin pointing to a problem. I reposted it
- here and on Prodigy, since the warning looked serious to me. Two Prodigy
- members who use MDS started a discussion with me, with one posting a reply
- >From Justin Gray (which I reposted in 10-145) talking only of a problem
- with the beta version of StuffIt--and another telling me he called Alysis
- technical support and was assured the problem was only with the beta
- version. I thought the Aladdin warning applied to all versions, so I asked
- both to test their versions of StuffIt; both had 1.5.1; both wound up with
- corrupted files. I then logged on to AOL and read through all the messages
- on the Alysis and the Aladdin boards. No further word about the problem
- >From Aladdin; no message from Alysis hinting of any problem with any
- version of StuffIt other than the beta version. Hence my note here.
-
- Paul ends by lecturing us on the duty of a beta tester to a vendor. Huh? I
- wouldn't care about a problem involving only programs in beta test--and
- I've never beta-tested any of the products mentioned. My warning was about
- released versions: a widely-owned product like StuffIt and an
- aggressively-promoted product like MDS. As far as I know, all versions of
- both programs have the problem when used together. That warning is
- important. Right?

- Perhaps Windows is already installed on alot of these machines but the
- peripherals and any appliations that people buy later aren't. Installing
- peripherals and even apps on machines running Windows can really be a pain.
- Windows also still crashes constantly. File management is still lousy too.
- There is also a big problem with apps conflicting with each other, much more

- different ways. I used a Windows machine at work for about a year and thought

-
- I believe that the PowerBooks also support the Apple RAMDisk option.
-
- I remember being told that the reason the RAMDisk wasn't available on
- lesser platforms was because the RAMdisk designers wanted the RAM disk to be
- able to survive restarts and system errors without losing any data on the
- RAMdisk. (try it and see...I was surprised the first time I used a ram disk
- and the Quadra crashed... the RAMdisk came back up in the Finder, no problem!)
-
- Apparently earlier versions of the ROMs execute a destructive memory test
- upon all startups or restarts. This destructive memory test overwrites
- all previous data in RAM as part of the test.
-
- Starting with the Quadras and the PowerBooks, the new ROMS run a
- non-destructive test instead, so your RAMDisk is ready and waiting for you
- when you finish restarting.
-
- Hope this helps,

- Bob,
- I don't have the v.32bis version (yet :-) but I have Supra's FAXmodem
- Plus (2400 V.42bis/9600 FAX) and am quite satisfied with it.
-
- The fax software (FAXstf) is good but not fantastic; it is missing a few
- features that are present in Quick Link II (which I had when I owned a
- Quicktel Xeba fax/data modem), e.g., a separate utility for converting
- common document formats into fax documents (i.e., in addition Print-ing
- from an application), the ability to "bundle" several documents together
- for transmission under a single cover sheet, etc.
-
- On the other hand, I had *major* problems getting the Quick Link II software
- to work properly (e.g., had to reconfigure & reboot between printing to fax
- from an application and sending the fax and then reconfig & reboot to get
- back to where I started from; the chooser device and background modem device
- driver couldn't peacfully coexist)[*], whereas I've had very few problems with
- the FAXstf software (fewer features, but they >work<).
-
- Also, the hardware construction of the Supra modems is superior (esp. when
- compared to the Xeba modems). They are very compact, sturdy (metal cases),
- have clearly marked indicators on the front-panel (vs. cute little icons on
- the Xeba modems) and the tech support is very good (they respond quickly,
- esp.
- to FAXed questions :-).
-
- Based on my experience with the Supra FAXmodem Plus, I would expect the
- V.32 modem(s) to be an excellent choice.

-

- Subject: Aladdin & Alysis: miscommunication
-
- there is a long flame at the criticism of Alysis with respect to a
- bug (since fixed) in MDS. This issue was discussed for several weeks
- on Compuserve. What happened is that Alysis violated Inside Mac
- guidelines for the value of a particular inter-program communication
- variable, by passing the compressed size of files instead of the
- expanded size. When Aladdin went to process those files, it was
- told of the compressed length, but given the expanded file. It
- stopped processing after <compressed length> bytes and this caused
- users to lose information.
-
- Alysis first attempted to make this look like a bug in Aladdin's
- product. Then it argued about the value passed. Then, when Inside
- Mac was quoted to it, it argued talmudically about exactly what
- Apple meant, and argued historically that if Apple only knew what
- conditions were today they wouldn't have said what they said.
-
- All this highly offended a number of members, including some of
- the most famous Mac gurus with no connection to either Alysis or
- Aladdin. In addition, Alysis took the disingenuous position that
- it wanted communication, and wanted to argue with Aladdin over
- whose bug it was. At a low point, Alysis even threatened to patch
- Aladdin's application. Alysis continually posted misinformation
- during this process: at one time they told me the "problem was
- solved" when nothing of the kind was true--all that happened is
- that Aladdin spoke to them on the phone and Alysis concluded it
- was Alysis' bug and they'd have to fix it. But it wasn't fixed,
- and Alysis subsequently retracted their statement that the problem
- was solved. Finally, after much yelling and screaming from users,
- Alysis fixed it (in the upgrade that came out last week).
-
- Let's not repeat this rain dance here. Nobody who criticized
- Alysis has a hidden agenda. Alysis, after much evasion and
- resistance, fixed the problem. It's over. Let's move on.
